I haven't read this guy myself, so I don't know much about what his deal is, other than that he is super old and intended to be creepy. My question is this: he is said to be "cursed" (The Fourth Apprentice, page 278) -- but cursed by what? A curse implies a deity, spirit, or some other powerful figure/s must have singled him out for some reason (let's not get into why) and done this to him. We can assume it's not StarClan, as that group doesn't have jurisdiction over the ancients/the tribes/anybody but the Clans, and they don't have much power over the living anyway. So, aside from the Tribe of Rushing Water's afterlife crew, what other mystical groups/beings are there in canon, and what could have given Rock his curse?

I was under the impression that he was one of the young cats that had gotten stuck in the tunnels but never found a way out. But then I found out he was a the first Teller of the Pointed Stones, so I have no clue what's going on here. All I know is, anyone who is constantly reminding the main characters of their destiny automatically irritates me.
Maybe he was cursed by the Ancients' ancestors? Or maybe he's over-exaggerating about his situation and he was placed there on purpose by the Ancients to guide Jayfeather since he claims that their prophecy has been around since the beginning of time.

Ew, what? He was a Stoneteller? That makes absolutely no sense, what on earth do the tunnels have to do with the Tribe??

The Ancients became the Tribe...but to the best of my knowledge Rock never left the tunnels. So WTF.

Two questions. 1. If the Ancients' ancestors formed a StarClan equivalent, why would they have cursing powers and StarClan not? 2. How can a prophecy be around since the beginning of time? I'm getting the vibe that this guy is fond of hyperbole. Also can this just... be our national motto? But if the Ancients become the Tribe, where did the Clans come from? The Ancients don't operate like the Tribe at all! That makes no sense!

I honestly have no idea what is going with Rock. Here's what I know He and Midnight have know each other since the Beginning of Time, he gets stuck in the tunnels, has that strange stick, somehow becomes the second stoneteller, Half Moon was the first, and can't feel emotions, and that I don't like him as a character.

I'm beginning to think that the whole Ancients and Rock subplot was just poorly put together. It seems Erin just put stuff together as they went along, not caring if it made any logical sense. I know he's supposed to be mysterious, but I think they weren't planning on anyone actually analyzing him like this. I didn't even pay to much attention to all this, because I was too busy fuming over Hollyleaf's behavior.
He's annoying, he's ugly, and he claims not to feel emotions. Words cannot describe how useless he is to me. I have a feeling he could of been interesting, but that went out the window along with Sol.

So basically, Rock turned out to be yet another pointless jerk for "plot."
Erin Hunter, I swear, I will punch all four of you in the face.

Oh yeah. Definitely. I pretty much assume that with everything they do. However, it can also be entertaining and worthwhile to search around for some hidden sense to it. About his claim to not feel emotions -- that's what he says, but I'd be interested to see if there's any counterevidence to that. It's easy to claim you don't feel emotions, but nothing comes to mind for any reason why that would be the case (and as mentioned, he seems like an embellisher) so if someone posted a few of the scenes where we see him, there might be hints of something else going on underneath the surface, and we can begin to ask why he would be lying. How much of this real, and how much of this is an act? What does he have to gain by lying? Or maybe he really does have an incapability to feel emotions, and everything he says is true. I'm not sold on it yet. edit: went snooping around Nightcloud's wiki page and found this. Rock uses the term "to feel sorry for," something analogous to feeling pity. If we can agree that such a sentiment requires the capability to feel emotions, then either Rock is speaking of other cats' feelings or his own. In context, he does not explicitly identify them as his own. However, in speaking about how "easy" it is to feel pity for Nightcloud, he doesn't clearly mark it as someone else's opinion, either. He doesn't say, "Here's why I think it's so hard for you to feel bad for her," or anything like that. He puts on a pretense of speaking in general -- which is something confident people do when they're talking about their own perspective (and their own feelings). If he didn't have the ability to feel emotions, how would he have any idea how easy it would be to feel sorry for her? His mysterious wisdom? Granted, if we take him at his word here, then that means he does not feel sorry for her -- but that he even bothered to state as much implies that he might feel sorry for a different cat. Thoughts?
