Here I would like to post a conversation I had one of my name rating boards on the official fourm. Names are blanked to protect the idiot innocent:
That's what the are, cthey just look like raidrops
The name of the cat that was spoken of was called Dewdrops. Not only does the name provoke a different mental image than what the cat was in reality (my guess was a grey cat), but the thought process behind the name was just plain silly.
Tons of inexperienced roleplayers do this, most likely because they are either uninformed, don't care, or are just plain hardheaded. As a result, they create names based on what humans percieve to be beautiful instead of the real purpose of the names which is to describe the cat and it's attributes. This defeats the purpose of roleplaying non-humans in the first place; they might as well be roleplaying a group of tribal humans.
Another name that appeared on the board was "Myxrose" (The rper informed me beforehand that Myx means mystery and that she loved roses) This is a HORRIBLE reason to name ANY character. Why do young writers always feel the name to their character something that doesn't fit the situation just because they like it personally? Save that for naming your pet or even your child, not for characters.
T'l:dr When naming characters for any occasion, focus on naming them based on what the situation calls for, not based on what you like or think is pretty. Characters should be tools used to interact with that environment, not a way to insert yourself.
