Since we're on the topic of "mysterious" characters, I just wanted to bring up Sol for an analysis.
Let's forget that he is yet another tortoiseshell-and-white tom and look at his place in the story.
For some odd reason, he knows how to foretell solar eclipses and know the prophecy that surrounds the main characters. I don't think it was ever explained how he knew these things at all.
To make matters worse, he slowly progressed from a competent antagonist to some sad pathetic cat. Apparently he was bullied before and since then he vowed revenge against StarClan by making cats go against the warrior code? And then he joins SkyClan???
Why the sudden change of heart? How did he know about clan life and culture so well? His history suggests that maybe he has SkyClan heritage? How did he know about the eclipse and the prophecy?

Ack, the Erins please stop making tortie toms, when the chance of them is rare.
I do believe Sol joined SkyClan before he met the clans, but apparently he failed so badly at clan life, he was to eager to be come a warrior, he regarded the code plenty of times, and apparently put the SkyClan endanger with some foxes, then he was exiled. I do believe his revenge come from that.
I think he also stayed with Midnight and somehow learned about prophecy and eclispe via from her, because in prologue of I believe Long Shadows has the founding leader ganging up on Midnight for some reason, I forget. Honestly, I really don't know what's with him at all.

He's like the walking embodiment of The Power of Three series. He's mysterious and intriguing, but after a while you realize that none of these mysteries are being solved and the whole thing was incredibly pointless.

I remember being really excited when Sol was introduced because he seemed like an interesting antagonist. I thought he had mystical knowledge and used it for dark purposes. After he sowed the seeds for the Clans battling during the eclipse, and after he convinced ShadowClan to turn away from StarClan, I thought his goal was to spread anarchy throughout the Clans. He could have been interesting in that it seemed like his goal was to use the Three and his supernatural knowledge to tear the Clans apart and make them worship him as a god, and the Three would have to choose whether to listen to him or to StarClan.
Then they never did anything with him and made him some pathetic excuse for a character and I was 500% done with the series for years.
GDI, Erin Hunter. Did you get a Ph.D in wasting potential?

That explains things a good deal. But that makes his mission to destroy to clan's faith in StarClan even more sad and pathetic. It kind of ruins the expectations I had for him becoming a compelling character in the beginning of the series. And as it turns out, he's not even good at defending himself. He's just a minor nuisance not even deserving the amount of time given to him.
