Well hello everyone, i'm in need of a bit of assistance involving a lovely, but very nervous stray cat i'm trying to help out. It would be wonderful if anyone of you have worked with stray/feral cat's before, and even better if you've had experience with extremely skittish cats. Listen up children, it's story time!
So yesterday I was at the psychiatrist's office, and while walking up the long path to the building itself, I had the amusing thought of finding a cat out here after noticing a slab of white rock that resembled a cat (I don't know how I saw that either. I have horrid vision).
Well, guess what I found settled on a strip of wood by the pond when I was walking back to the car? That's right, long behold, there was a black she-cat( or at least i'm assuming it was a female, but it might be a tom.) staring right at me as I walked down the sidewalk. Now, i'm used to having stray cats around as I live next to a barn that has quite a few milling around. For the most part they're quite friendly, but I do remember a pregnant she-cat who was quite vicious. So I did what I normally did as I got closer, I crouched down and started making 'tss, tsss' noises, going 'here, kitty-kitty', and all of that nonsense. As I got closer I noticed she was actually very tiny, and was quite thin. She had some gorgeous, wide yellow-green eyes, and I believe I made the mistake of staring at them. Because of her lovely eyes, i've taken to referring to her as 'Iris'. But, I didn't even manage to get 5 ft away from her before I spooked the shy thing, and she bolted across the street.
However, i'm not the one to forget any sort of animal. I'm going back tomorrow evening armed with a can of Friskies, and some cat treats to try and catch her so I can take her to the vet to get her checked out, and perhaps even adopt her if my parents will be up to it. I'm conflicted, though. I've rigged an old dog crate with some string so I can catch her that way, but for whatever reason, i'm not fond of the idea. I could also put the food down, walk some away, and hold out some treats for her while I sit and hope she'll have the courage to approach me. Obviously, the chances of her doing that are quite slim from the way she ran yesterday.
So, I was hoping if any of you could give me ideas and some help on what I should do? I really want to help poor Iris out, but I want to make sure I can capture her without injuring either of us in the process. Tips?
