Chapter 14
Brambleclaw convinces Crowpaw not to be an idiot. And here I thought something interesting was going to happen.
They stand around too long when a bulldozer comes up behind them and Firestar starts issuing orders. Tawnypelt agrees to show them they way out since she knows the territory the best.
From what? That's a BS job and Firestar knows it.
Firestar finally tells our brave protagonists (i.e. Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw) to follow Tawnypelt into the camp and to make sure no one is left behind.
What kind of question is that?
No. This is the opposite of a battle. It's a retreat.
They get to the camp and it's basically chaos. I can't believe that these cats didn't have the common sense to leave yet. Also, i'm tired of kits being described as "scraps of fur". Find a different metaphor.
There's a small bit about Hawkfrost and Mistyfoot having a disagreement about whether they should stay or not, but I'm not in the mood to entertain Erin's careless attempt at characterization.
Squirrelpaw, Brambleclaw, and Tawnypelt check the dens a final time, but while checking the medicine den, Squirrelpaw gets stuck in some brambles. Brambleclaw saves her though, and they finally leave the camp just as it's being destroyed.
The rescue cats do a quick head count of the cats in ShadowClan.
This could have all been avoided if Tallpoppy's mother had the common sense to name her based on pelt color.
They find Tallpoppy though. The trees, grieving the death of their kin, begin to spontaneously fall to the ground. One of them manage to take Firestar with it. Spontaneously Falling Birch gains 986 points in experience.
That typo ruined all seriousness from this situation.
Brambleclaw says they've got to move but Leafpaw says they can't risk moving him. Another tree falls, covering them all in branches. Firestar comes back to life and a curious human looks through the branches, scaring the crap out of all the cats.
Yeah, because catching cats is what humans live for. It's not like they're too busy demolishing the forest or anything.
Are the humans in this series idiots or something? Why is he chasing her? If his boss knew he was wasting time chasing cats, he would surely be fired.
What's more, the guy savagely starts the stomp on the brambles she's taken shelter in to flush her out. Bears have better common sense than this.
Once the others are at the edge of the territory, Squirrelpaw finally leaves to join them.
Lesson of the day: Common sense is a rare concept in this book.

But, Celestial, why would the Erins ever write humans as good??? Blasphemy!

Plot twist- all the humans in this book are carrying the Orb of Confusion (to which prolonged exposure will give you... confusion)

I know, right? I mean, it's not like there's humans that like animals or anything!
That explains a lot.

Chapter 15
This chapter is in Spottedleaf-in-training's point of view.
All the cats make it on the other side of the road. ShadowClan is basically in shock over all the things that had happened to them. Leafpaw insists that everyone rest a while before moving on.
Mistyfoot announces that she's taking her warriors home, but then Firestar asks if she can help them get ShadowClan to Sunningrocks. She agrees, but warns that ShadowClan was not allowed in RiverClan's territory and Hawkfrost voices his support. Of course this sets Squirrelpaw the Righteous off, but Brambleclaw settles it.
When they return to Sunningrocks it's noted that all the cats group together according to their clans, a lot like what happens in a high school cafeteria.
....Cody, when are you going to go home?
Frostfur, maybe your old age is getting in the way of your thinking skills, but why would the whole of ShadowClan follow Firestar home if they had a camp to go back to?
The next part is just the medicine cats + Cody attend to the cats' injuries. What is Ferncloud doing with her life? Cody is practically Birchkit's mother now.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Did Leafpaw just instruct Littlecloud?
Leafpaw leaves the rest of her work to her apprentice, Cody, to go see to Firestar. He's washing dried blood from his claws. From where this blood came from, I know not. Leafpaw is genuinely curious of what losing a life must feel like.
Mistyfoot announces that RiverClan has agreed to leave the forest on the account of the humans redirecting the river. Blackstar agrees to go on the journey with the others.
Possible source of the book title? Also, who appointed Firestar king of the cats?
There's the question of where they would be going and Brambleclaw suggests that since the sign from StarClan never came, then they should go to the beach.
The chapter ends when Leafpaw makes the startling discovery that the cats have to start using their brains instead of depending on dead cats to do all the work for them.

Ugh, that bit where an apprentice is telling Littlecloud what to do is where I officially lost all patience with ProtagonistClan. Let it be known that this is where my patience ran thin. Consider tables flipped. (do you think that warrior cat Rudyard Kipling would write a poem called "The ThunderClanner's Burden"? Because I'm seeing shades of imperialism in how TC are taking the reins without anyone actually handing them over)

I'll like to see another clan take the lead for once.

Chapter 16
It's that night and Leafpaw can't sleep. She decides to go for a walk, but Cody catches up to her to tell her something.
Why, exactly? I'm glad Cody knows where she belongs unlike Daisy.
You're horrible Leafpaw. Absolutely horrible. Let's forget that at the beginning of the book Cody mentioned that her housefolk was like family to her. She clearly loves them.
Why are all my favorite characters non-clan cats?
After Cody leaves, Sorreltail comes out of no where. I suspect she was spying on the both of them. The two of them decide to sleep right there in the middle of the woods.
It's raining the next day and for some reason everyone is worried about it. You guys live outside, mud is not a big deal.
While they wait for RiverClan, Firestar tries to assert his self-appointed leadership over all the clans and order all the cats to go hunting. Blackstar corrects him however, saying that ShadowClan can organize their own hunting patrols. Of course, we're supposed to dislike Blackstar for putting Firestar in his place.
Brambleclaw is told to organize two hunting patrols.
Because Firestar doesn't care about traditions. You can't tell Firestar what to do.
Cinderpelt is told to prepare traveling herbs and she's worried that where they're going won't have any of the herbs medicine cats are taught to heal with. She also remarks that ShadowClan should have swallowed their pride and joined the ThunderClan patrols. Leafpaw can't seem to comprehend why ShadowClan wouldn't want to be bossed around by Firestar.
Leafpaw goes to tell her father about Cody's departure. There's some talk about Leaf wanting her to stay, but Firestar basically says she wouldn't have made a good clan cat because she's a scaredy-cat. The topic changes to be about Graystripe.
Firestar, you cray cray. There should be an alternate universe about what would happen if Firestar never chose a new deputy and he died, leaving ThunderClan without a leader.
The hunting patrols come back and of course ThunderClan finds enough prey to feed everyone, while ShadowClan only finds a thrush. I call hacks. ShadowClan is forced to share that thrush as punishment. Perhaps now they will bow to the all-knowing power of ThunderClan.
What's not to understand? She has an image to keep up. How would it look to ShadowClan for her to be all buddy-buddy with you?
Leafpaw lends them her wisdom before she is called away by Cinderpelt. She hands out the traveling herbs to the queens and elders. Glad to see Ferncloud is finally back on the job. Leafpaw gets a shock, however, when she hears that the elders don't plan on going on the journey. They figure they'll only slow the clan down and would rather die where they are. Firestar does manages to convince Longtail to go with them.
Stormfur brings news that Mudfur is dying and the elders decide to be with him while the other cats go on their journey. Firestar and Runningnose wants to visit though, so Blackstar says that he'll take Longtail to head to the edge of the forest with ShadowClan while everyone else visits Mudfur.
When they get to RiverClan's camp they discover that Mudfur is nearly dead.
How could he? He's half dead!
All the medicine cats grieve as he died.
I'm beginning to notice a trend with the end of these chapters. It always ends with the protagonist thinking some troubling or disturbing thought, which is almost always in question form.

Okay. Okay, do you want Interventionist Thunderclan or Isolationist Thunderclan? Not to be rude, but it seems like y'all get on Thunder for being all up in everyone's business all the time. And yet now. That they're...leaving a clan to fend for themselves you're like...'WTFISWRONGWITHYOU?' But perhaps I am misunderstanding.
Anywho. It sounds more like Firestar's trying to respect Blackstar's pride than trying to slight him. But then. I haven't read the books in a while.

Chapter 17
Mothwing is understandably distraught. Cinderpelt basically says there's more important things to be doing besides grieving. Leafpaw goes to comfort her regardless.
Leopardstar announces that Shadepelt and Loudbelly are going to stay with the ThunderClan elders. She decides now is the time to leave saying they'll "hunt on the way". It begins to rain in that cliche way when something sad is happening.
The clans reunite at the edge of ThunderClan's territory where they all take a minute to say good-bye to everything they've ever known. Sasha finds them and ShadowClan and ThunderClan cats who didn't know who she was showed open hostility towards her.
My first guess would have been to say good-bye to her kits. But I suppose Squirrelpaw's brain has stopped working at the moment.
Apparently, Sasha thinks a clan is a day care service. You can just drop your kits there, let them raise them, and then take 'em back anytime you want.
Even though Firestar is right, I really expected Leopardstar to say this. He's really taking this self-appointed leadership thing seriously.
In desperation, Sasha reveals to everyone that Tigerstar is Mothwing and Hawkfrost's father. But Firestar's inspiring speech convinces most of RiverClan that they deserve to stay. When asked if they were going to leave, both cats answer negatively.
What difference does it make?
Sasha accepts their decision and leaves, wishing them good luck.
Chapter 18
Rainwhisker notices that WindClan is waiting for them in the horizon and they all rush to join them. I kinda wish Erin would describe these cats a little before having them do stuff. That way I don't have to flip back to the allegiances.
They explain the reason why they took so long and Tallstar gives his condolences. There's doubt that StarClan will be where they're going and Squirrelpaw says they saw Silverpelt at the beach.
Squirrelpaw is mindblown.
They finally stop wasting time. WindClan leads them through their bulldoser-infected territory. As expected, the cats are spotted and every human in the area zooms in towards them.
"Look guys! CATS! Drop everything you're doing and lets follow them!"
Anywho, Dawnflower has a case of Queen Syndrome and nearly everyone has to help her ONE kit that got left behind instead of her getting off her lazy butt and getting it herself.
After that small bit of excitement, they take a rest and Firestar has a suggestion.
It's about time these leaders grew a pair.
Blackstar agrees they stick closer together, but the clans must still listen to their own leaders. He also points out that each of the clans has a cat that has been to the beach, so each clan knows the way.
Brambleclaw has a plan to position all the chosen ones to travel at the edges of the group with Stormfur as lead because it is their "responsibility to protect them". Okay.
W h a t ? What is a dog doing here? Why would construction workers have a dog? You know what, it doesn't even matter. I'm skipping this.
After some dramatics a human comes forward and catches the dog. What goes through Squirrelpaw's head as the man saves Crowpaw from being mauled by a dog?
Nope. Not reading the rest of this chapter. 100% done.

I can wish up and down that ThunderClan was different, but I'm reading a canon book and as such, all I have to work with here is canon ThunderClan. Canon ThunderClan is kind and generous to everyone. Therefore, I think I'm allowed to express some amount of shock when they don't act accordingly. You're right that it sounds like Firestar is respecting their pride. But, I was just thinking if I was ever in ThunderClan's position and I witnessed something like that, I would kind of feel like an a-hole. But again, that's my take on the situation.

First off, I'd like to say that I did not intend to make you feel as if you're not allowed to express an opinion/reaction. That was not my intention. However, I am unclear on a few things.
This passage shows that they are also capable of stepping back and caring for their own, I think.
As I said, I didn't mean to imply that you weren't allowed to express an opinion/reaction. Instead, I was trying to figure out where you stood, as in the past it seemed like you expressed dismay at Thunderclan's motherly and interventionist practices.
An a-hole? These clans are meant to be enemies and Thunderclan does have itself and its own to think about. It's only natural that one clan should want to favor the health of its own members over that of another's, callous though that seems from the human perspective.
